Check Out….

In the 1970’s I was intrigued by Ronald Laing’s idea that ‘madness’ was actually a sane reaction to an insane society. But the case studies he used to illustrate the point were a bit convoluted to say the least and I later came to a different personal conclusion. ‘Madness’ is (often) an insane product of an insane society.
What these views share in common, of course, is the proposition that society (rather than the individual) is frequently the primary source of mental health problems. This leads me to recommend any material which looks at the underlying deviancy of social institutions. Two recent examples would be:
Dalrymple T. (2010) ‘Spoilt Rotten’. Gibson Square.
Furedi F. (2003) ‘Therapy Culture’ Routledge.
Also the recent film – ‘Inside Job’.
